Just about everyone who works in politics or journalism started as an intern. Unpaid or barely paid jobs doing the often unheralded and critical work of shaping and telling the stories that matter is how almost everyone gets their start. Interning is as much a part of the SMPA experience as Intro to Poli Comm and Intro to News Writing and Reporting.

Interning is also expensive. Even after winning a coveted role at a network or on the Hill, students have to figure out how to pay rent and buy food. Everyone remembers the struggle and how the difference even another $100 would make.

That’s why several SMPA alumni started the Career Access Network, or CAN, a fund to which SMPA students can apply to help make interning in DC over the summer financially possible. The bigger the fund, the more students we can support and careers we can help launch.
